![]() The Silk Project grew out of Senechals own curiosity and long-standing interest in the history of textiles. Senechal, the Louise Wolff Kahn Professor in Mathematics and History of Science and Technology, is the driving force behind the community-wide project that has become known as The Northampton Silk Project. ∺nd yet there has been little or no study of it until now. ∽elving into the silk industry that used to exist here illuminates so many things about social history and Northamptons history, says Smith Professor Marjorie Senechal. Although its not widely known amongst local residents that one of the leading 19th-century silk thread manufacturers in the world was located in Northampton, a close look at Northamptons city seal reveals an intricate outer ring of silk moths and mulberry leaves. Thanks to several members of Smiths faculty, staff and student body, Northampton is unraveling a forgotten but important thread of its historythe silk industry.
